My personal journey into photography and the creative industry is perhaps a bit different than most others. Quite often, photographers will say “I always loved taking pictures as a child” or “used to love nothing more than sit at my desk and draw for hours.”
Well, that wasn’t me. As a kid I was always fascinated with how things work; still am. My Mum & Dad are both engineers so that pragmatic, inquisitive and problem-solving way of thinking definitely rubbed off on me. When I was 8 I couldn’t draw; still can’t. But I was rebuilding car engines with my Dad in the family home and fixing all my friends’ bikes.
So, how did photography come about? Well, like most amazing things that happened in my life, I have my wife to thank for that. Years ago, she bought me a camera as a birthday present. Bit corny, I know, but it’s the truth. So I started making pictures. The dog, the garden, the car and yes, made the wife model! After the first six months I genuinely think she started regretting getting me the camera…
The more I shot, the more I loved it. The more I loved it, the more I wanted to learn, perfect and push myself. This is one thing I really enjoy about photography – you’re never done, the learning never ends. New equipment, techniques, lights, retouching and, most importantly for me, how to use all of that to instigate the reaction I strive for when someone views my work. A clear purpose in my images is essential to me, be it a sale, smile or tear.
I guess it’s that “engineering brain” I mentioned earlier that triggers me to always start with why I am creating an image, before getting to how I am going to create it.
Thank you for taking the time to get to know me a bit better and please feel free to drop me a line to say hi or if you would like us to be a part of your next project.
